Eurekas nuture young scientists

Tuesday, March 29, 2011

Almost two hundred Eureka Ambassadors gathered at the Australian Museum to watch 23 year old Matilda-Jane Oke deliver her Eureka Moments Address.

Matilda entertained the audience with her memories of what it was like to win a Eureka Prize as a 13 year old high school student.

"Coming to Sydney for the Eureka Prizes would still have to be one of the most exciting nights of my life and probably the most overwhelming", she said.

"For me the best part was learning about all the great things happening in science, and also getting to meet some of my science heroes."

Now a PhD student at the University of Western Australia, Matilda shared the frustrations and joys associated with being a young scientist and the importance of support and recognition.

To recognise and support the next generation of scientists like Matilda, enter or nominate for the following prizes:

Eureka Prize for Outstanding Young Researcher

Eureka Prize for Emerging Leader in Science

Sleek Geeks Science Eureka Prize (Primary and Secondary)
